BODY FOUND IN DITCH OFF HIGHWAY 140: The California Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a motorcycle rider whose body was found Thursday morning at the bottom of a ditch off Highway 140 near Catheys Valley east of Merced. It is believed the rider lost control of the motorcycle and was thrown from the vehicle. The body was discovered when a passer-by found the motorcycle on the side of the road shortly before 6 a.m.

BROTHERS PLEAD GUILTY: Brothers Robert and Paul Slawinsky pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Tuesday in Tuolumne County Superior Court in the death of Carl Stephen Knight, 23, of Tuolumne City. Knight died April 6 during a fight with the Slawinskys at their home in Jamestown. After being charged with murder four days later, they told investigators they threw Knight's body off the Jacksonville Bridge and into Lake Don Pedro. His body has not been recovered. John Hansen, a Tuolumne County prosecutor, said he will seek an 11-year term for each of the brothers. Robert Slawinsky, 28, and Paul Slawinsky, 26, will return for sentencing Aug. 11 at 3:30 p.m.

SONORA SEEKS SUSPECT: The Sonora Police Department is looking for Jose Sacramento Sanchez Reyes. He is 33 with black hair and brown eyes. Reyes is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He has a felony warrant for his arrest on suspicion of child endangerment, driving under the influence and driving on a suspended license. NEW CHP CHIEF: The California Highway Patrol has a new chief for its Central Division. Chief Jim Abrames took charge Tuesday and will oversee the nine Central Valley counties from Modesto to the top of the Grapevine. Abrames replaced Chief Scott MacGregor, who took a position at CHP headquarters in Sacramento. Abrames, 45, joined the CHP in 1985 after attending California State University, Sacramento. He lives in Fresno with his wife, Brenda.
