RELIGIOUS PRACTICES MAY LENGTHEN LIFE

A study by researchers at Yeshiva University and its medical school, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, strongly suggests that regular attendance at religious services prolongs life by 20 percent. The study, which evaluated the diverse religious practices of 92,395 post-menopausal women, said even after adjusting for healthy activities, the mortality rates exceeded expectations.

APOLOGY FROM BOB JONES U ON HISTORY

The president of Bob Jones University has apologized for past school policies that excluded black students and banned interracial dating. The school admitted black students starting in 1971 and ended its ban on interracial dating in 2000. "We conformed to the culture rather than provide a clear Christian counterpoint to it," the school Web site said. "In so doing, we failed to accurately represent the Lord and fulfill the commandment to love others as ourselves."

BIBLE TRANSLATION GETS BOOST WITH DONATION

The goal of Wycliffe's Last Languages Campaign is to translate the Bible for all of the 2,400 languages that still do not have one. Those represent nearly 200 million people, mostly in Central Africa, India-southern China and Indonesia-Papua New Guinea.

NEW BOOKS

"Commander of the Faithful" by John W. Kiser (Monkfish Book Publishing, $28.95) is a nonfiction, dramatic story of quarreling tribes, Sufi sects and brotherhoods, treacherous Ottoman officials, rival French generals, secret negotiations, terrible atrocities and warfare. No, it's not a current account. It's the story of Abd el-Kader, who in the 1800s received accolades and awards from France, Britain, Russia, the Ottoman sultan, the pope and President Lincoln.
