SURVEY FINDS YOUNG INCREASINGLY SPIRITUAL

A benchmark survey finds that 55 percent of young people ages 12 to 25 say they are more spiritual now than two years ago. But nearly one-third said they don't trust organized religion. The survey of 6,853 subjects by the Minneapolis-based Search Institute was released recently at the Healthy Communities, Healthy Youth Conference.

BISHOPS CHALLENGE OBAMA ON ABORTION

In a direct challenge to President-elect Obama, America's Roman Catholic bishops vowed last week to accept no compromise for the sake of national unity until there is legal protection for the unborn. About 300 bishops, gathered in Baltimore for their national meeting, adopted a formal blessing for a child in the womb and advised Chicago's Cardinal Francis George, president of the conference, as he began drafting a statement that will call on the new administration and Catholics who supported Obama to outlaw abortion.

LETTER URGES BUSH TO ADDRESS INDIA ATTACKS

A series of violent attacks on Christians in India calls for a "strong and urgent American response," a broad group of U.S. Christian leaders urged President Bush in a letter. "What has happened recently in India ... is tantamount to 'religious cleansing' of Christians and other minorities by extremists," said the letter signed by 24 Catholic, Orthodox, mainline Protestant and evangelical leaders. Since late August, rampages by Hindu hard-liners have left 38 people dead, as many as 30,000 homeless and dozens of churches destroyed.

DALAI LAMA COMING TO SANTA BARBARA

The Dalai Lama will speak at two public meetings on April 24 at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He will give a morning lecture on "The Nature of Mind" and an afternoon speech on "Ethics for Our Times." Tickets, from $20 to $100, go on sale Dec. 6. Visit www.religion.ucsb. edu/dalailama.

FOCUS CUTBACKS

Focus on the Family, a conservative Christian organization founded by James Dobson, announced this week that in light of lower contributions in the economic downturn, it is cutting about 150 jobs and not filling 50 others. Dobson said many of the employees have been with the organization for 20 years or more. Focus is headquartered in in Colorado Springs, Colo.
